more updates on Magellan Roadmate 360

Two more annoyances for this system. I am still happy with it though.
  1. When you need to enter an address like First street or Second Street or stuff like that, make sure you try both "First" and "1st". The system seems to have 1st street for some cities and First street for some other cities.
  2. When you enter a street name, if there are multiple cities having that address, the system asks to enter the city. It would have been better if it presented a list from which we could select from using the touchscreen.
The big positive thing so far is I havent lost the signal yet. In some other navigation systems people seem to be referring to lost signals.

  • Thanks for your heads-up about the Costco coupon. It got me interested in this unit. I'm curious because you are from California, you are not supposed to use the windshield mount for the GPS unit. How are you mounting the RoadMate in your car? Have you tried the vent mount or gooseneck cigarette lighter mount?
Also, do you know how large the hard drive is for this GPS unit?

  • I heard that there is a dashboard adapter available from Magellan for ~$45.

This unit does not have a hard drive; it uses a Secure Digital memory card. This is why it may be slower than other GPS systems.

  • It's not a hard drive, it's an internally integrated SD card. I don't know how large it is because mine is covered with a "warranty void if removed" sticker. You can access it as a USB drive by plugging it into a PC or Mac if you want to browse the files, but it seems pretty opaque.

I'm also in California and I've been (illegally) using the windshield mount. I've seen CHiPs with more crap mounted in their windshields, btw ;) my boss has a Valentine-1 and he's had it mounted there for years. They haven't complained so far though YMMV, of course.

  • Also, has anyone figured out how to make the map view an arbitrary location? i.e., enter an address, and get the map there?
